Gateway Questions and Answers

• Who is qualified for the program? Men who have been homeless for one year or experienced four episodes of homelessness in the last three years are qualified for services.  According to the United States Housing and Urban Development Department (HUD), a homeless person is someone who is living in one of the following places: In places not meant for human habitation, such as cars, parks, sidewalks, abandoned buildings (including the street), or in an emergency shelter.
• How much does it cost? The program is provided at no charge until the residents obtain employment or benefits.  After 60 days of employment or the initiation of benefits, residents will pay rent based on a formula established by HUD.
• Will men who have a criminal background be excluded? Each application will be considered on an individual basis.  Individuals who are registered sex offenders are not eligible for services.
• Are substance abuse problems addressed? Men who are addicted to drugs or alcohol may be required to complete treatment before they may enter the Gateway Project.
• How long may residents stay in the Gateway Project? Residents may remain in the Gateway Project as long as they are adhering to predetermined guidelines.
