Youth Services

The Youth Department provides drug and alcohol prevention and intervention to
school districts in a 8-county area, which include Refugio, Calhoun, DeWitt,
Goliad, Gonzales,J
ackson, Lavaca, and Victoria counties.

The goal of youth prevention programs is to preclude the onset of the use of
alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs by youth and to foster the development of
social and physical environments that facilitate healthy, drug-free lifestyles.
Through our prevention program, we facilitate small groups and provide universal
classroom instruction.  Participants learn skills necessary to refuse drug and alcohol
use with lessons on goal setting, decision making, assertiveness, and drug,
alcohol, and tobacco education.

The goal of youth intervention programs is to help individuals participants who are
showing early warning signs of substance use or abuse and/or exhibiting
other high risk problem behaviors.  Through our intervention programs, we
facilitate small groups sessions that include motivational activities, social skills
training, and decision-making components that are delivered through group
discussions, games, role-playing exercises, videos, and student worksheets.

Federally recognized curriculums are used in both programs.  These programs are:

  • Kids Connection -- 10-session support group for K-5th grade
  • Protecting You Protecting Me - 8- to 10-lesson alcohol use prevention curriculum for elementary students grades 1-5
  • Elementary Life Skills Training - 8 session universal classroom instruction for 3rd-5th grade
  • Middle School Life Skills Training - 14-session universal classroom instruction for 6th grade; 10 sessions for 7th grade; 9 sessions for 8th grade
  • Project Success - 8-session curriculum designed to prevent and reduce substance use among students 12 to 18 years of age
  • Project Toward No Drug Abuse - 12-session interactive drug use prevention curriculum designed for high school youth
